Garden Route Florist, Ecozest
Garden route Florist, Ecozest is a floral and garden design studio based just outside of Knysna at Rheenendal. They create beautiful and thought-provoking floral design for weddings, corporate events and other celebrations. We had a chat with Hannes who is a landscape architect with a passion for plants and design, his gardens are beautiful, embracing a sense of place and biodiversity.
Q: How did you get started in your industry? Give us a bit of background information.
A: I had a weekend job as a teenager in a florist and loved it. My Grandfather grew show dahlias and other flowers and my mother loved gardening. It was something I grew up with. I studied fine arts and worked with a student friend doing wedding flowers on weekends. After my studies I wanted to explore and work abroad. I spent 4 years working as a florist in London doing flowers for places like The Tate Gallery, V&A Museum and other exciting projects including some for the Royal Family and the millennium service at St Paul’s.
Q: Why Weddings? Why do weddings make you excited? Why do you love doing weddings?
A: We love doing wedding flowers. Every couple is different and the process of working with each couple to realize a unique design vision is a fulfilling experience. At the end it is a group effort with all the other service providers, all giving their best to realize their dream. We pride ourselves in providing a superb design, décor and floral story that resonate and inspire the guests, photographers and everyone else to have a most enjoyable time.
Q: Where do you get your inspiration from?
A: Having studied fine art and working as an artist and being interested in design we live and breathe inspiration. We are constantly aware of creative possibilities to bringing a fresh and original approach to our design. Working with flowers and nature provide endless inspiration – it’s a matter of being consciously aware to harness the creative moment when it presents itself.
Q: You have been a Garden Route florist for a while now. What makes the Garden Route so special to work in?
A: The Garden Route area is a naturally beautiful area with diverse vegetation and different landscapes. There is gentleness about this area. The top secret of this area is that it is most beautiful in winter, with beautiful clear days for a picture-perfect wedding!
Q: What advice or tips can you give couple wanting to get married?
A: Find reputable service providers that are professional, passionate and take pride in their work. Be open with your service providers, trust their creativity and knowledge and allow them to design for you. We live in a time of so much creative possibility, let’s not limit ourselves by watered down overused ideas and visual references.
Q: What was the highlight of your career so far?
Having worked in the industry for more than 20 years it is hard to highlight one! I would say working on a special wedding with a very design literate client, conceptualizing a totally indigenous wedding concept for a group of international guests and photographed by a top international photographer. She did not want any of the images to be published. I think this is very stylish and in today’s overload of visuals on social media, it feels rather special to know that some of our best work is regarded as exclusive enough to be appreciated by only their wedding guests.
