An interview with one of the top wedding Garden Route Wedding Photographers – Alicia from Fijnbos Wedding & Lifestyle Photography.

1. How, when, where and why did you get started as a wedding vendor? Has it always been your dream job or did you happen to fall into this profession?

My journey into wedding photography has been a dream in the making. What began as Alicia Louwrens Photography has now blossomed into Fijnbos Wedding & Lifestyle Photography—named after the stunning natural surroundings of Dana Bay along the Garden Route, where I’m based. Photography has always been more than just a job for me; it’s a calling. I’ve always been drawn to the emotion, connection, and storytelling that weddings offer. There’s something magical about capturing those once-in-a-lifetime moments, and I feel incredibly lucky to turn that passion into my career. Fijnbos is truly an extension of my heart—where love, light, and storytelling come together.

2. Describe what services you offer for potential clients and what they can expect working with you. How do you ensure that each wedding you’re involved in reflects the couple’s individuality, needs, wants etc.?

I specialize in wedding, lifestyle, and portrait photography. Every session is carefully curated to reflect the couple’s unique journey. I believe no two love stories are the same, so I make it a priority to get to know each couple personally—their vision, energy, and even the little quirks that make them who they are. My goal is to create a relaxed environment where people can be themselves, which allows me to capture genuine, candid moments. Clients often tell me that they feel at ease in front of my lens, and that’s the best compliment I could ever receive. With me, you’re not just hiring a photographer—you’re getting a calm presence, a creative collaborator, and someone who genuinely cares about your story.

3. There are a lot of wedding photographers these days. How do you stay inspired and continue to innovate in your work within the wedding industry?

Inspiration is everywhere for me—especially in nature and human connection. Living and working along the Garden Route, I’m surrounded by ever-changing landscapes that constantly spark new ideas. I also find inspiration in the small moments: a tearful glance, a spontaneous laugh, a quiet embrace. I keep evolving by playing with light, movement, and new editing styles, while staying true to my storytelling roots. Every couple inspires me in different ways, and that keeps the work fresh and meaningful.

4. What are some of the most memorable weddings (or wedding highlights) you’ve been a part of and why do they stand out for you?

There are so many unforgettable weddings, but the ones that stay with me the most are often the most heartfelt. I remember one couple who said their vows as the sun set behind them, surrounded by fynbos and ocean breeze—it was intimate, raw, and incredibly emotional. What makes these moments stand out is how deeply present everyone is. I’m always looking for those subtle, unscripted moments that others might miss. Those are the real treasures.

5. The Garden Route & Klein Karoo are unique with regards to natural landscapes etc. How do you incorporate this unique landscape and culture of the Garden Route/Klein Karoo into your services as?

The natural beauty of the Garden Route and Klein Karoo is something I lean into fully. These landscapes aren’t just backdrops—they’re storytellers in their own right. I take time to scout unique spots that suit each couple’s energy, and I always aim to let the scenery enhance their story. Whether it’s a golden field, a quiet beach, or a forested trail, I incorporate these elements to create images that are both timeless and rooted in place.

6. As one of the top wedding photographers in the region, what do you think sets weddings in the Garden Route/Klein Karoo apart from weddings in other regions?

Weddings here have a kind of magic that’s hard to replicate elsewhere. There’s a peacefulness and authenticity in this region that helps couples truly relax and enjoy the moment. The pace is slower, the venues are more intimate, and the natural surroundings are breathtaking. It’s a perfect blend of adventure and tranquillity. The unique character of the area naturally weaves itself into the fabric of every wedding I photograph here.

7. What advice do you have for couples who are considering a destination wedding in the Garden Route/Klein Karoo?

Go for it—you won’t regret it! My advice is to embrace the natural beauty and let the location guide your choices. Trust local vendors who understand the landscape and can help you make the most of what it has to offer. Most importantly, be present. Don’t get caught up in the little things, soak in every laugh, every tear, every kiss. I’ll be there to capture it all so you can relive it forever.

8.  What sets you apart from other wedding photographers? What makes your style unique?

What makes my style unique is my deep focus on emotion and storytelling. I’m not just capturing images—I’m capturing feelings. Clients tell me that my calm, friendly approach helps them feel comfortable, even if they’re nervous in front of the camera. I pay close attention to the little moments: a hand squeeze, a quiet smile, the way two people look at each other when they think no one’s watching. That’s where the magic is. My work is a reflection of the love and light I see in others—and I’m honoured to share in that experience every single time.
