Q: How did you get started in your industry and as Garden Route wedding planners? A bit of background/bio information.
A: We are a mother daughter duo, who started out in event planning and floral design a decade from now. We are originally from Germany, where we both worked in the corporate field before and had a venue that was gown out of a bigger private event that we held. We transformed a church building into an event location in 2008. This was supposed to be used by close family and friends only, initially we never assumed to be starting out as event planners. But the business grew from there, because people could feel, touch and see that we were passionate about what we were doing – and we always added that little extra personal touch. When people work with us, they become part of our family, which is possibly a big secret to our success. The steps were initially small when we stepped out of our comfort zone of becoming event planning professionals. First we accepted to open our venue to outside guests, then we were asked to do weddings outside our venue regionally and eventually we brought our expertise to South Africa and the Garden Route, where we live for more than 20 years. We also work in the Middle East and since 2016 we trade in flowers with Yes! exclusive flowers, which gives us a great advantage to be able to showcase our flowers and brand-new varieties that we import or source locally when designing our events. That means you can always expect a great amount of real flowers at your wedding. We combine the event planning and floral styling part and manage both in-house – that means you only have to talk to one person to get two major boxes ticked when planning your wedding. It comes handy that we are Germans after all and love efficiency apart from pretty.
Q: Why do you love doing weddings?
A: There is not a more personal celebration on this earth than that of a wedding– and it is so unique, just as every couple for which we organize and style it– no wedding is like the other, no setup is the same. It is very special to be trusted as one of the first people in the process of planning this big day and to be contacted to coordinate the celebration of the union of two lives that shall last a lifetime. Just think about it: we are one of the first person to meet and the last persons the bride sees before walking down the aisle after many months and sometimes a year of planning this amazing moment. A very special connection is required to click and to make that wedding dream come true, to understand the couple and to bring their vision to life. On the other hand we have to keep it real – it is a challenge at times and we have to assist in making that planning journey a positive and most memorable one, at day and night, weekends, weekdays or public holidays – this is only possible when you love what you do and not consider it work. The best part of what we do is that we are people’s people – we love to connect with people from different parts of the world, with different backgrounds, ideas and walks of life and with every couple that we meet, our family grows bigger. That is a great gift because in a world that is highly technical and tends to focus more on machines than people, planning a wedding is still about the purest emotional and personal bond. It’s about two people that by miracle meet somewhere on this big planet, who found compassion and trust in one another and who promise to never give up on each other until the day they die. This is big. It’s working for such pure values and motivations that bring the most happiness to our job and it is a beautiful thing when our passion and a career come together in such an impactful, beautiful way to assist making lasting memories. And of course we are always surrounded by pretty a things – scented flowers, soft fabrics, beautiful furniture, amazing architecture, magnificent fashion – who doesn’t love to be part of doing weddings?
Q: Where do you get your inspiration from?
A: Our style can be described as naturally elegant – and we love to be inspired by Mother Nature. We also both love to travel and that adds certainly to creativity. We also work in Europe and the Middle East and we love destination weddings wherever our clients take us. This gives us a big exposure to different aesthetics, styles and trends. That being said – we try to be true to ourselves as much as we can and just draw inspirations from what we see elsewhere.
Q: What is the highlight of your career as Garden Route wedding planners so far?
A: Two events certainly stand out: one was bringing floral design queen Karen Tran from America to Cape Town for her ever African Floral Experience master class in 2015 and working with industry game changers, such as Munaluchi, the first bridal magazine for couples of colour from the States. They organized the Coterie Retreat with us in 2017 in Johannesburg. It is a yearly get together of the biggest names in the US event industry, for which we had the pleasure to host Preston Bailey, another amazing wedding design icon, alongside other top American industry professionals.
BUT nothing compares to that moment when our couple enters the room for the first look of their wedding design – this is a highlight on a totally different level, it’s real and it’s about those personal memories that will last forever. Those smiles, big eyes and sometimes even tears of joy and excitement are second to none.
Q: What makes the Garden Route so special? Why Garden Route wedding planners?
A: We fell in love with the Garden Route over 20 years back – our family resides here in a beautiful home right by the sea. We see the dolphins jump out of the waves every morning and have a magnificent unspoilt beach just in front of the doorstep of Villa Oceanvoice and we feel it is one of the most beautiful places on this planet. The diversity in flora and fauna, in landscapes, colours and light is just breath-taking and still has us in awe after all those years and make being Garden Route wedding planners special. The close proximity of the ocean to the mountains, to the forest and the Karoo makes this stretch of land truly special. Compared to big city light locations or overly marketed areas around the country, the Garden Route has an unparalleled charm of being a polished jewel in the making, yet it has professional and warm-hearted vendors and unique locations. You can have a beach ceremony and a forest reception all in a day; moderate weather throughout the year and you will find suppliers that value your business with a smile and walk the extra mile to make your day extra special. Business is still very personal in every way.
Q: Being specialist Garden Route wedding planners, what advice or tips can you give couple wanting to get married?
A: Breathe. Don’t forget to breathe and take the planning process of your wedding as the first project that you are working on together. There is a fun element to it that you should not forget, a lot of couples stress over a lot of things that on the wedding day itself will not even matter anymore. After all its about celebrating your love and not your problem-solving skills. Remember is much easier to decide on the wedding colours, or invitation card fonts of your wedding day than the kitchen tiles for your new home. It is just the start of a beautiful journey – it’s about you, just do what YOU like, it will all fall into place – especially with professional and caring assistance your day is in good hands!
