Please give us an introduction of who you are and what you do?

My name is Gavin Brown, and I am a registered marriage officer specializing in officiating weddings throughout the Garden Route, from Mossel Bay to Nature’s Valley and beyond. With 15 years of experience, I take great joy in working with couples to make their wedding day truly unforgettable. Known for my flexibility and approachable nature, I strive to ensure that each ceremony is as unique and memorable as the couple themselves.

Describe what services you offer for potential clients and what they can expect working with you.

I offer a range of services to make sure your wedding ceremony is perfectly tailored to your needs and preferences. From guiding you through all the documentation needed to get legally married in South Africa, to designing a custom ceremony that reflects your personal style with a relaxed, heartfelt touch, I’ve got you covered. I also officiate vow renewals and handle all the legal paperwork, including submitting documents to Home Affairs and issuing your marriage certificate and register copies on the wedding day. Plus, I take care of registering your marriage at Home Affairs and stay up-to-date with requirements, especially for couples involving international elements. After your wedding, I can help you get an unabridged marriage certificate with an Apostille Stamp for any international needs.

What are some of the most memorable weddings (or wedding highlights) you’ve been a part of and why do they stand out for you?

One of the most memorable weddings I’ve been a part of was a German couple’s celebration at Buffelsdrift Game Lodge. During the ceremony, the elephant handlers brought the elephants up close, which was an amazing experience. One particular elephant, always on the lookout for snacks, spotted the bride’s bouquet. Before anyone could react, the elephant used its trunk to snatch the bouquet and ate it in one gulp! It was a truly unforgettable moment

How do you stay inspired and continue to innovate in your work within the wedding industry?

To keep things fresh and stay inspired in the wedding industry, I stick to a few key practices. I love brainstorming creative ideas with couples while really tuning into their vision for their ceremony. I think everything beyond the legal vows is up for customization and should reflect what the couple wants.

I also cherish the chance to be part of their special day. As their wedding approaches, we meet up for coffee to nail down all the details and make sure everything feels just right for them. On the big day, I get to the venue an hour before the ceremony starts to prep and make sure everything is smooth sailing. I stay tuned in to the couple’s emotions, keeping things calm so they can focus on their vows without stressing over the details. This approach helps me bring a personal touch to each wedding and keeps the experience exciting and new for every couple.

What sets weddings in the Garden Route/Klein Karoo apart from weddings in other regions?

Weddings in the Garden Route and Klein Karoo are truly special because of their stunning natural beauty and diverse settings. The Garden Route truly offers it all – beach, forest, bush, mountains, lakes and everything else. Most weddings here are held outdoors, weather permitting, which adds a relaxed and heartfelt touch to the celebration while still honouring the significance of the day.

These days, there are so many wedding officiants out there. What do you think couples should look out for when deciding who to select as their wedding officiant?

When choosing a wedding officiant, there are several key factors couples should consider to ensure they find the right fit. First and foremost, it’s important to choose someone you connect with and who gives you peace of mind about your ceremony. Think about what’s most important to you for your wedding. For example, if you want a non-religious ceremony that highlights your love, or if you’d like to include personal vows, a unity candle, a sand ceremony, or handfasting, make sure the officiant is comfortable with and can accommodate these elements. If you only need someone to handle the legal aspects, that’s fine too. Ultimately, select an officiant who will honour your requests, tailor the ceremony to your style, and make it uniquely yours.

You have done hundreds of weddings by now – what are the absolute ‘do not do’ advise that you can give couples? Name as many as you want.

There are a few key pieces of advice I always share with couples. First, keep the ceremony length in mind. From my experience, especially with outdoor weddings, a meaningful ceremony doesn’t need to be lengthy. Aim for around 25 minutes—this keeps it engaging and prevents it from dragging on. Another important point is the timing of the bride’s entrance. While a 10 to 15-minute delay is generally acceptable, anything longer can be disrespectful to your guests, who may have been waiting in the sun for a while.
